Silang Mayor Denies Allegations Amid Six-Month Suspension

Mayor Alston Kevin Anarna of Silang denies involvement in alleged anomalous purchase of festival items that led to his six-month suspension. Anarna refuted accusations, pointing to another unnamed town official as responsible for the questioned transactions.

The suspension, ordered by the Office of the Ombudsman, also affects Nathaniel Anarna Jr., Mayor Anarna's brother and municipal administrator. The suspension follows a complaint by Edgardo Arenco Bayan, alleging irregularities in procurement for the Silangueño Ball held on Jan. 28, 2023.

The Ombudsman's decision, revealed on April 24, cites evidence of grave misconduct, serious dishonesty, and conduct prejudicial to the service. The purchase, allegedly violating Republic Act 9184, involved flowers and string lights.

Anarna expressed surprise at the suspension, noting the comparatively small amount involved. He lamented being held accountable for mismanagement he claims not to have overseen, criticizing the state of politics reflected in his case.

Vice Mayor Edward "Ted" Carranza assumed the role of acting mayor, with Mark Anthony Toledo sworn in as acting vice mayor.
