Philippine LGU Implement Four-Day Workweeks Amid Rising Temperatures
As temperatures continue to rise due to El Niño, Philippine Local Government Units (LGUs) are adopting a four-day work week to protect employees
Responding to the warnings of the state weather bureau indicating that the temperatures would climb up to the description of “extreme danger” levels, governors and governments have decided to take precautions for the safety of the workers and citizens' health and productivity.
Working hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Thursday have been a suggested schedule to be given to those working.
However, this schedule will not affect services like emergency response, traffic, and health.
In Cavite, Governor Jonvic Remulla had mandated a Monday to Thursday work schedule from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. until July 31 to mitigate the health risks.
Bacoor City and municipalities in La Union have also shifted this schedule to address rising temperatures and enhance productivity while conserving resources such as water and electricity.
Pangasinan and other localities have also implemented the suggested four-day workweek strategy.
Meanwhile, Negros Oriental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) has recommended the entire province under a state of calamity, declaring the significant agriculture losses caused by El Niño.
San Enrique and Kabankalan City had already been placed under a state of calamity due to 30 percent of the population's livelihood being affected as well as the continuous negative effect towards the city's agriculture.
Over 103 cities and towns nationwide have already declared calamities, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated response efforts to support affected communities.
New Schedule:
Bacoor City | Four-day Workweek M-W | 8 AM to 7 PM |
